Tips on Crates for Dogs

Crates should never be considered a substitute for diligent training and supervision. The need for safety and shelter is but one of a dog's needs. If these are not appropriately addressed, crating may only create new problems. Buy a crate the appropriate size. Your dog should be able to stand up, turn around, and lie down. Some crates have partitions that can 'grow' with the pup. This is HIS personal space and should feel comfy. A thought on training your dog to use a crate. The crate is a safe haven for Fido. He feels comfort in its small space. Would it not be better to have your dog crated whilst you're away and know that he's safe, rather than have the possibility he may be in harm's way or just in plain trouble? As long as your dog is healthy, there is no harm in his being crated during your absences. He would be sleeping on the couch anyway!

The relationship is not just about establishing dominance or submission, although these are certainly aspects of the relationship. It's more about establishing mutual trust, respect, and understanding.

Independence Day celebrations are great fun for people, but the loud noises and bright lights can be traumatic for dogs. With the excitement and commotion, Bark Busters, the world's largest and most trusted dog training company, offers the following helpful tips for the estimated 43 million U.S. dog owners on how to keep their dogs safe and calm during July 4th festivities:

If you are going to a fireworks display, leave your dog at home where he will be the most safe and comfortable.
If you go to a holiday event, never leave your dog in the car. A partially opened window does not supply sufficient fresh air, and it creates an opportunity for your pet to be stolen.
Always keep proper identification securely fastened to your dog's collar in case he gets out. Talk to your veterinarian about implanting a universal microchip in your pet, and make sure that your veterinary clinic and animal shelter have your correct contact information in their database.

Summertime can be fun for both you and your dog. But pet owners need to take some precautions to keep their canine companions happy, cool and safe during the dog days of summer. Bark Busters has created the following tips to keep in mind for this summer:Beat the HeatRemember that a parked car can become dangerously hot in only a few minutes. Inefficient at cooling themselves, dogs cannot perspire and can only dispel heat by panting and through the pads of their feet. Panting and drinking water helps to cool them, but if they have only overheated air to breathe in a parked car, dogs can suffer brain and organ damage after just 15 minutes. Your light-colored dog's coat can invite damage from the sun's ultraviolet rays, leading to sunburn and possible skin cancer. If your dog is light-colored and/or he lacks black pigment around the eyes, ears and nose, keep him out of the bright sun. Ask your veterinarian about sun block for your dog, preferably in a formula he can't lick off. Dogs should always have access to cool shade and fresh water in the summer heat.
