A thought on training your dog to use a crate. The crate is a safe haven for Fido. He feels comfort in its small space. Would it not be better to have your dog crated whilst you're away and know that he's safe, rather than have the possibility he may be in harm's way or just in plain trouble? As long as your dog is healthy, there is no harm in his being crated during your absences. He would be sleeping on the couch anyway!
